King Carl
(4 items)
The Spokane Indians Baseball Team, in collaboration with the Carl Maxey Center, The Black Lens, and Spokane NAACP, launched the ‘King Carl Campaign’ in early 2024. Named in honor of local civil rights activist and champion boxer Carl Maxey, the campaign serves as a vibrant celebration of our region’s Black community and the team’s ongoing commitment to supporting communities of color.
The King Carl logo, created in conjunction with Brandiose, features numerous nods to the life and work of a true Spokane icon. Maxey's standout boxing career at Gonzaga and revolutionary spirit are represented with a boxing glove raised defiantly skyward. A gold crown bejeweled with the colors of Black History Month befit a man nicknamed "King Carl", while a tassel highlights Maxey's trailblazing academic and professional achievements. Subtle references to the baseball team and Maxey's reservation upbringing can also be seen in a feather and stitching on the glove.
